Contract Chartered Civil / Structural Engineer

Minimum contract length: 6 months

Rate: £55 - £80ph DOE

We are delighted to be exclusively working with an international defence business in the Southwest on a high profile, multi-million pound scheme. A new major projects team has been established to undertake  a range of major projects including design, build and commissioning of defence facilities.

This role is for a chartered Civil or Structural Engineer from a consultancy background to join in a long term contract position, initially for a period of 6 months this position is likely to be extended up to 18months.

We are recruiting into the position of Principal Specification Engineer which will be largely home based with the occasional visit to site. This person will be responsible for developing a series of standardised specifications that can be used in infrastructure projects. Please find a full summary of duties below:

  • To develop a series of standardised specifications (Master Specifications) that can be used in infrastructure projects.
  • To collaborate with design and construction task teams to ensure Projects Specifications are appropriate for the planned works activity.
  • To provide leadership for specification writing (Business Unit champion) and associated training delivery.
  • To defining the governance and processes for successful specification writing and development.
  • To maintain specifications by keeping clauses up to date with legislation, British Standards, EN codes and other related standards.
  • To promote the use of the preferred specification management technology platform and ensure engagement with IT and the vender periodically for updates.
  • To ensure that specifications are coded with clear conventions – such as CAWS and Uniclass.
  • To ensure that sensitive asset specifications are controlled and separated where necessary and working with the MIP Built Asset Security Manager to ensure security classification markings are appropriate.
  • To ensure the connection of specifications with Building Information Models developed by the project team and making sure geometric assets are coded inline with the Project / Master Specifications.
  • To work with the BIM team to develop BIM families (annotation) tags that can read from the Project Specification headers, and provide reliable links.
  • To support review and approval of specifications to confirm the specification meets requirements.
 

Required knowledge, skills and experience:
  • Design of civil engineering, structural engineering and architecture.
  • Knowledge and experience of Building Information Modelling (BIM), BIM standards (ISO-19650) and object naming standards (BS 8541).
  • Knowledge of classification schemas such as: CAWS, Uniclass.
  • Minimum 10 Years Design & Construction Experience.
  • Experience of specification writing tools including the use of NBS Chorus and linking with BIM.
  • Experience with the following platforms; Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, Inventor, Civils3D.
  • Awareness of COBIe and IFC
 

Qualifications:
  • A Degree in an appropriate engineering or technical discipline (or equivalent), for example Civil, Structural, Architecture, MEP.
  • Chartered Engineer, registered with Engineering Council (or working towards).
