Job Details

We are delighted to be working with a long standing client of ours, helping them in their search for the next member of their structural design team. This business has a rich history of innovative and elegant building design and holds a significant share of the local market.

This Engineer will be responsible for managing design development and delivery of structural engineering solutions for projects, ensuring designs are safe, elegant, robust and fulfil the project brief. You must be self-motivated, with a strong focus on attention to detail with developing technical abilities. You must be able to semi-autonomously deliver projects to a high standard within target budgets and timescales and collaborate as a key team member, both internally and with the wider design team. Projects include a wide range of structural and civil engineering but are predominantly building structures, frequently in the historic environment, unusual and challenging.

Reporting to the Directors, and Associate, you should undertake responsibilities with increasing autonomy with appropriate guidance and supervision of senior colleagues. Engineers require a good technical understanding of calculation and drawing practices and must be able to demonstrate appropriate scheme design, calculation and drawing/CAD competencies as well as good written and verbal communication.

Roles and Responsibilities

Spending time both in the office – designing and managing projects – and onsite where you will support contractors, monitoring construction and responding to requests for information with clear, concise and appropriate technical advice.

  • Assume ownership and manage delivery of all aspects of projects, from inception to completion
  • Generate elegant and viable structural schemes, including sub and super-structures, in all principal construction materials, (steel, concrete, masonry and timber), considering efficiency, cost, pragmatic construction, aesthetics, robustness, durability, environmental and sustainability issues, and the project brief
  • Undertake manual and automated supporting calculations, (Tekla Structural Designer and Tedds), in accordance with the relevant Eurocodes
  • Generate hand and/or electronic drawings and sketches, (AutoCAD, SketchUp, PDF Editor, Concepts and paper)
  • Write and compile technical reports including calculation packages, structural inspections and site visit reports
  • Manage own workload, deliver
  • mapping/drawings and client/public archives
  • Design, procure and interpret geotechnical and/or building investigations
  • Directly liaise with clients and design teams to progress and coordinate projects 
  • Directly liaise with contractors, responding to site queries in a timely manner
  • Attend site to monitor progress of works and report on the same to clients and/or design team
  • Assist as/when required with the preparation of fee proposals
  • Contribute to discussions on working practices and the continuous improvement of the IMS, ISO’s, processes and standards
  • Contribute to discussions on workload and resourcing
  • Commitment to maintaining IPD/CPD 
  • Working with a variety of projects including; listed buildings, conservation work, commercial, bespoke residential and leisure
 

 

Ideally candidates will have the following experience:
  • A relevant degree in civil or structural engineering
  • Working experience within a structural design consultancy, relating to building structures
  • Experience using AutoCAD, an understanding of Revit and BIM in design
  • Experience working collaboratively with various design teasm
