Senior to Principal Electrical Design Engineer – Building Services

📍 Southampton (Hybrid Working)
💼 Full-Time
💰 Highly Competitive Salary + Bonus + Excellent Benefits

About the Role

A well-established, independent M&E consultancy with a strong regional presence is looking for an experienced Senior to Principal Electrical Design Engineer to join their growing Southampton office.

This role is ideal for someone looking to step into more technical leadership, project ownership, and client-facing responsibilities. You’ll be involved in the delivery of complex, sustainable building services projects across healthcare, education, research, commercial, and industrial sectors.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Lead electrical design packages on medium to large-scale projects, from early concept to construction and handover
  • Oversee the technical quality of design outputs, ensuring compliance with current legislation and client expectations
  • Mentor and manage junior and intermediate engineers, supporting their development and reviewing their work
  • Coordinate designs across disciplines (mechanical, sustainability, BIM) for fully integrated MEP solutions
  • Engage directly with clients, architects, and contractors — taking ownership of relationships and technical delivery
  • Prepare project briefs, specifications, design risk assessments, and reports
  • Take an active role in fee proposals, bid submissions, resourcing, and project planning
  • Drive sustainability and innovation across electrical building services, including smart systems, low-carbon tech, and energy strategies
  • Support business growth by contributing to internal best practices, QA, and team development

What You’ll Bring
  • Degree-qualified in Electrical or Building Services Engineering (BEng, MEng, or equivalent)
  • Typically 7+ years of consultancy experience in building services design
  • Strong technical background in designing low-voltage power, lighting, fire alarms, comms, and containment systems
  • Proficient in software such as Amtech, Dialux, AutoCAD; Revit/BIM experience is highly desirable
  • Chartered or working towards CEng status with CIBSE or IET
  • Proven ability to manage projects, lead meetings, and develop lasting client relationships
  • Capable of managing design teams and delivering work to a high standard within time and budget
  • Sound commercial awareness and a proactive mindset

Why You’ll Want to Join
  • Join the South Coast’s largest independent M&E consultancy with a reputation for excellence
  • Hybrid/flexible working options that support a healthy work-life balance
  • Projects that matter: impactful designs across hospitals, universities, research labs, and heritage buildings
  • Structured career progression with opportunities to move into Associate or management-level roles
  • Generous package including:
    • 28 days’ holiday + bank holidays
    • Discretionary annual bonus
    • Private medical insurance
    • Life cover
    • Enhanced pension scheme
    • Cycle-to-work scheme
    • Training budget and full support towards chartership
  • A collaborative, people-first culture that values integrity, technical quality, and long-term relationships
